Victor Valley NAACP Branch 1082 Celebrates the 29th Annual Freedom Fund Awards Gala
Victorville – October
16, 2009 - Victor Valley National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (VVNAACP) Branch 1082 will honor those
who had the “Bold Dreams, Big Victories” to bring about a positive change for the high desert communities. The VVNAACP and those we honor saw a need for empowerment in social justice for all
citizens-economic, political, social and community, criminal justice, health care, education and housing.
The VVNAACP is delighted this year to recognize award honorees. All
awardees receive recognition for their work to achieve social justice in the high desert communities.
Education Advocate Award:
Dr. Anthony Chambers saw a need to grasp at- risk youth who were falling
through the crack in the public school system. He opened the High Desert Academy
of Arts and Sciences to serve the students in the socio-economic communities of the high desert.
Business Award:
Wilson So is a business owner, and board member with Apple
Valley School District. He diligently works behind the scenes to bring about social justice not only in business but also in education. Wilson is the owner of Wilson Engineering Company.
Community Service Award:
Rev.
Nathaniel Ruffin has brought about advocacy
in the religious, educational and community services throughout the High Desert. He
was active with the High Desert Black Heritage Committee, Clergy for Victor Valley Hospital, and counselor
for Victor Valley High School just to name a few.
President’s Award:
The President’s Award this year goes to a member and
long time resident, LaVora Brown, who in spite of physical challenges, continues
to work when called upon to do what she can to be of service in the community.
Faith Award:
Award goes to Emannuel
Temple C.M.E. Church for its outreach to families and individuals in need of food, clothing, and financial help in times
of urgent need.
The
Keynote Speaker:
Reverend, Dr. Duneen deBruhl is an advocate of social justice in education,
faith, and community outreach programs. She joined the youth NAACP at the age
of fifteen. Rev. Dr. Duneen
DeBruhl is Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services for Victor Valley
Union High School District. She has made a positive difference throughout her multiple careers.

at 7:30 P.M.
